Customer Care – do you care enough?
He didn’t care.
I walked in with my parcel. He continued looking at his phone. I said “hello”. He muttered something under his breath and carried on tapping.
My “RUDE” button was pressed.
I continued “I have a parcel to drop off”.
He grumbled “the machine is outside”.
My eyes rolled and my annoyance rose.
I walked outside to find the machine as he shouted after me, “don’t rip my labels!”
I want to turn and throw the parcel hard at his lowered head. But I held back and went outside.
The machine was under the external awning with a place to scan my delivery code. I tried to scan at the point were a sh!tty label has been placed with a felt tip arrow and “scan here!” written in smudged pen.
The code wouldn’t scan despite me seeing it on the screen being within the [ ] marking. My blood is now at boiling point.
I turn to see if the rude, preoccupied business owner has seen I am having trouble. No chance. He is still, bent head, tapping on his phone.
I can’t believe this rude business owner has friends at this point so who the hell is he messaging!
I walk off with parcel in my hand. I vow never to use that newsagent again. I tell everyone I meet in the next hour how awful the customer service was and I stomp off to another shop to give them the business instead.
He did care.
I walk in with my parcel (it still needed posting). Instantly I get a smile and a friendly gesture towards the label machine.
I feel better already and all I have had so far is a smile.
The machine is the same as the other shop so I know where to scan but the code will still not scan.
I tell the man I can’t get the code to work.
Instantly he comes out from behind the counter, takes my phone and tells me there is a knack to the angle you hold it at.
Voila the machine is printing a label. He continues to take the label off, stick it on for me and then a receipt.
“Thanks for your help”, I said. “It was no problem” he replied.
Customer care is essential to every business and it’s free. Don’t be the person that doesn’t care as it will impact your business success.
